Political satire is still alive and well for now.
[
brief ]
This portion of my site is a simple list of actual news
stories from reputable news sources with the intent of providing
some indication of the current state of liberty in America.
The Onion, a website
with purely satirical purpose and excellent prose recently
posted a fictional report headlined "Bush Grants Self Permission
To Grant More Power To Self"
Aside from the humorous implications I believe it also captures
the feelings that many people have at this time about the
potential for abuse of personal liberty that the actions of the
current administration represent.
It is my belief that threat of terrorism being touted
as the justification for many of the actions of this
administration is miniscule when compared to the jeopardy
of permitting the executive branch of the government
to rule unchecked. To help put things in perspective
consider that during the horrific 9/11
attacks 2,976 people died as a result. During
same year in the US over ten times as many people, more
than 40,000, died in automobile accidents. As of the
time this article was written 2,580 men and women
of the US military have been killed in Iraq. If the
situation continues as it is now the number of US
military killed in Iraq will exceed the number killed
in the 9/11 terrorist attacks in early September of
2007.
It is my hope that the 2006 mid-term congressional
election will give the opposition party majorities
in the House and Senate. Remember the words of
Abraham Lincoln:
America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter, and lose
our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves."
